Formally described in 2009 by Ji, Ji and Zhang, this taxon represents one of the largest known basal tyrannosauroids and one of the most prominent predators of the Jehol Biota. Its generic name means Chinese tyrant, while the specific epithet kazuoensis refers to Kazuo
